Liberia vs Nigeria: Onyekuru, Simy score as Super Eagles win

The Liberian president, George Weah, on Tuesday featured in an global friendly for his country against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Although sporting a little extra weight than in his playing days, the 51-year-old still showed some fleet-footedness and managed 79 minutes before leaving the field to a standing ovation.

Weah, a former European footballer of the year, is the only African to have won the Ballon d'Or, Onze d'Or and Federation Internationale de Football Association world player of the year awards.

Given he's been the president of Liberia since January, George Weah therefore has the power to make pretty much anything happen in his country; his say is final.

"We can not confirm this since our historical records do not include every worldwide friendly that has taken place", a Federation Internationale de Football Association spokesperson told BBC Sport.

The Super Eagles had originally been scheduled to play Saudi Arabia in a friendly but the fixture was cancelled because of concerns about logistics.

The friendly match was organized in order to retire Weah's iconic jersey number - 14.

Former Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille star Weah is not expected to continue his global career beyond this match.

Liberia has never qualified for a World Cup but fell just a point short of reaching the 2002 finals with Weah and Debbah to the fore.

The game, which was played in Monrovia, ended as a 2-1 win for the Super Eagles with Nigerian goals from Henry Onyekuru and Simeon Nwankwo before the home team scored in a penalty taken by Kpah Sherman.
