Barcelona did not meet Ajax valuation of Frenkie de Jong - Marc Overmars

Ajax are bracing themselves for winter transfer window bids for 21-year-old midfield star Frenkie de Jong, reports Mundo Deportivo.

De Jong was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona during the summer transfer window, but Ajax ultimately managed to keep hold of the central midfielder.

The Lilywhites, who ended the summer window without any incomings, have a concrete interest in signing De Jong and are understood to have made contact with Ajax last week.

"They may return for Frenkie in January, but players will not leave in that period". After returning to the Champions League group stage this season, the former European champions are determined to retain their squad as they try to reach the knockout phase.

But this time around, Barcelona won't have it easy as Real Madrid have also joined the race to sign Frenkie de Jong according to the report on Tribal.

De Jong has emerged as one of Ajax's brightest prospects in recent years and, alongside the offer from Barcelona, has been attracting serious interest from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

At Barcelona they want De Jong to add to the midfield, he has similar qualities to Busquets but is better at arriving in the box.

De Jong began his career with Willem II Tilburg in 2015, making his debut against FC Den Haag in May of that year.

De Jong made his senior worldwide debut as a substitute for the Netherlands against Peru on Thursday before he was handed his first start in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to France. "He is doing very well now, but we have often had Dutch players who first played very well then later became less". The Dutch midfielder has scored 1 goal so far in his 37 appearances for AFC Ajax till date.
