Tottenham first Premier League team to fail to make one summer signing

Any hope with which Manchester United supporters woke up on transfer deadline day has quickly been quashed by Jose Mourinho.

Loris Karius had to be replaced after his Champions League final calamities and the club have gone big with a world record signing for Brazilian Alisson. "I'm not confident and the market closes today so it is time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed, so I will have to focus on the players I have".

"I think they need to go out of the Champions League pre Christmas to have a good chance of winning the league".

Liverpool will end their 28-year wait for a Premier League title by dethroning Manchester City this season, according to Ian Wright.

Even though the Liverpool side that will begin their latest attempt to win a first English top flight title since 1990 against West Ham at Anfield can not be compared to the iconic teams in the club's past right now, I have rarely felt more confident in what lies ahead as a new season beckons for a Reds squad oozing with talent and depth.

Pushed on whether there would be any ins or outs on Thursday, Mourinho added: "The information I have is no (nothing will happen)".

On the eve of the new season, which starts with United's clash against Leicester, Mourinho also claimed that finishing second last season, 19 points behind champions Manchester City, was "one of the greatest achievements" of his career.

Press Association Sport understands United have been keen to sign a centre-back, but Leicester's reluctance to sell Harry Maguire looks to have scuppered any move for the England star. Any deal for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld was a way off on the eve of the deadline and interest in Barcelona defender Yerry Mina has been tempered up until now by prohibitive financial demands.

Whatever the explanation, the lack of new faces compounds issues surrounding the United squad heading into the Premier League season.

"They returned on Monday", he said.

Up front, the dynamic trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have support from new arrival Xherdan Shaqiri and if his goal in the pre-season friendly against Manchester United in America last week is a sign of what is to come, he will be a bargain at £13m. "They trained on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today, so you can imagine that they're not really fit and ready, but we have needs", said the boss of the quartet.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

"I think it'll be tough but if they were to go of the Champions league and they had free weeks after Christmas, Saturday to Saturday they could be a real threat this season to City".
