It's not about you! Madonna slammed for 'disrespectful' Aretha tribute

It's not about you! Madonna slammed for 'disrespectful' Aretha tribute

Madonna presents a tribute to Aretha Franklin at the MTV Video Music Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, in NY.

"It wasn't until I had two little angels come into my life, that everything whole life became clearer in every way", she said of her children.

While it went in some unusual directions, she did manage to reign it in from time to time, but did tell a story about singing one of Aretha's songs for two French blokes at an audition, which, again, was less about the song, and more about Madonna. "She led me to where I am today", Madonna said.

Maybe there's a reason for all this?!

Cabello then collected the biggest award of the night for her Havana video with a bow to Madonna, dedicating the trophy to, you guessed it, Madonna. "She proceeded to share a story about how she was inspired by Franklin and how she "belted" out "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" at an audition for a gig she didn't book.

"After the show, my manager said my career was over", she said with a sinister smirk.

Madonna went on to describe how the producers didn't call her for weeks but said they wanted to take her to Paris to make her a star. Instead, she shared a story of her early days as a struggling singer and dancer living in a crack house. This is a jovial kiki about Madonna's broken a- journey.

Many fans felt Madonna failed to give enough respect to Aretha Franklin, pictured on screen, at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Madonna paid tribute to Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV VMAs on August 20, but many fans were left confused after the "Like A Virgin" singer mainly talked about herself.

"So you're probably all wondering why I'm telling you this story", she went on. But... no. How dare you, @MTV. How.

"That was so so so so disrespectful", wrote one user.

"Wha.what is going on here?!??"

She delivered a five-minute speech ending with her giving thanks to Franklin for "empowering all of us".

"Aretha, without question, [is] one of the greatest voices in music ever", he says of the late music icon, who appeared several times on VH1's Divas. Madonna stepped out on the stage at the VMAs adorned in a graduation robe and what looks like everything from her jewelry box paid homage to the Queen of Soul...but it wasn't the tribute many people had in mind.

Viewers were less than impressed however, as one said: "Who keeps letting Madonna do tributes?"
