Baker Mayfield leads impressive TD drive in preseason debut

Baker Mayfield and Saquon Barkley lived up to early expectations as the top two picks in the National Football League draft in their first action as the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Giants 20-10 on Thursday night in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In addition to his rushes, Mayfield completed two passes of more than 20 yards on the drive. It set up a 42-yard field goal by Aldrick Rosas.

Given how many times coach Hue Jackson has been asked about his starter for 2018, and how he has consistently answered with Taylor, there's enough for a "Hard Knocks" spinoff show.

It's only the first preseason game, but the Baker Mayfield hype train is running like a well-oiled machine. With a 100% completion rating during his short playing time, Taylor threw for 99 yards and hit tight end David Njoku for a touchdown to put the Browns up 7-3. Last year, as a junior at Penn State, Barkley had 1,271 rushing yards and scored 21 touchdowns.

Mayfield was up next and, following a three-and-out, settled in on his second series, finding Rashard Higgins with a pretty back-shoulder throw on the sideline for a 26-yard gain.

Taylor and Landry are the faces of an influx of talent this offseason following the franchise's first winless season.

Mostly notably, the additions of veterans Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry.

Against that backdrop, hope abounds Cleveland will make a 1-31 mark over the past two seasons feel like a distant memory sooner than later. It can also be taken as a challenge to Mayfield, humbling the first overall pick by making it clear he still has to earn the starting job and continue to earn it each day he plays in the league.

The Browns traded Corey Coleman to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
