Air quality to worsen in Northwest as smoke returns

Air quality planner for Metro Vancouver Julie Saxton explains it's hard to say when the smoke will clear.

Unhealthy air is common across the region due to numerous wildfires, according to the advisory.

Conditions are expected to get worse Sunday night and last through Wednesday.

A new mobile app from The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality allows you to have information about your area's air quality conditions at your fingertips.

As of Monday morning, Environment Canada considered Calgary's air quality to be at a 4, moderate risk, on the air quality health index.

"Medium range weather models suggest southwest winds will (bring) some clean air to western Washington by Thursday and in eastern Washington by Friday, perhaps keeping it all clean through the weekend, except close to major fires", the blog reported in a Monday post. However, it's not only B.C. struggling with hazy skies.

It's time to break out your particulate respirator mask.

Officials recommend staying inside with windows closed and air conditioners set to recirculate. Children and the elderly should avoid outdoor physical activity altogether.

"Wildfire smoke is a natural part of our environment but it is important to be mindful that exposure to smoke may affect your health".

The poor air quality can be especially unsafe for people with preexisting heart conditions.
