Misfiring Olivier Giroud making unwanted World Cup history for France

In a World Cup filled with exciting comebacks and a record-breaking number of matches decided by penalty kicks, all it took for France to best a high-scoring Belgian team was a single goal.

Left out of the starting XI for France's opener against Australia, the Chelsea striker has started every match since, but has yet to find the back of the net.

And the 19-year-old was overwhelmed at the thought of helping France reach the final in his first appearance at a World Cup.

Anxious England fans are posting hilarious memes moaning about being stuck at work as they count down the minutes to the historic World Cup clash with Croatia.

France players celebrate Samuel Umtiti's goal.

It was only two years ago that France reached the European Championship final on home soil, only to lose to Portugal in extra-time, and Deschamps told TF1 that result was still weighing on the team's minds.

"It is an unforgettable moment - I remember Zizou at the Arc de Triomphe, and I hope that we will have our chance".

"This is maybe a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".

They will now face Croatia or England in Sunday's showdown and are likely to be heavy favourites regardless going into that match. The victor will challenge France in Sunday's final.

Captain Eden Hazard shone at times but Kevin De Bruyne was quiet and Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku was a shadow of the player he had been earlier in the tournament, even though Belgium enjoyed most of the possession.

If there's one thing the Frenchman has shown this World Cup, is that he's able to contribute to the defensive side of things when necessary.

In delirious scenes in Paris, fans let off fire crackers and released smoke flares - and predicted they would win a second World Cup.
