Man accused of killing MA officer, bystander to be arraigned

A MA police officer was shot and killed with his own gun after a man attacked him with a rock during a traffic stop, officials say.

This story has been corrected to show that the suspect's first name is spelled Emanuel, not Emmanuel.

That's when Lopes threw a stone at the 42-year-old officer and shot him multiple times with his own gun.

One of the shots fired by Lopes struck and killed a woman inside a nearby home, police said.

Weymouth Police Chief Richard Grimes told media that Chesna was a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and left behind a wife and two children, ages 4 and 9.

Other responding officers opened fire on Lopes, who returned fire as he continued to flee.

A woman in a nearby residence was fatally shot during the incident, according to police.

Lopes suffered a leg wound while being arrested and is hospitalized at South Shore Hospital.

A MA police officer has been critically wounded, shot several times while in a foot chase with a suspect following a vehicle crash. He is being treated at South Shore Hospital.

Prosecutors and state police detectives assigned to the district attorney's office are assisting with an investigation.

Resident Susan Long says several officers swarmed the neighborhood in the moments following the shooting. He found a auto crashed and a man vandalizing a home.

Authorities say an on duty officer in Weymouth was shot Sunday morning and describe the officer's injuries as "life-threatening". The district attorney's office did not say that the auto was stolen.

Neighbors say he had been driving erratically as officers tried to pull him over.

The officer was only one day away from his sixth anniversary of joining the police department.
