Like England's Gareth Southgate, Croatian boss Zlatko Dalic did not did not begin the World Cup qualifying campaign in charge of the nation.

Two teams remain in one of the biggest tournaments in the world.

Ahead of the World Cup semi-final with Croatia in Moscow, several members of Leicester defender Harry Maguire's large entourage offered words of encouragement - including girlfriend Fern Hawkins, who wrote on Instagram: "Today's the day..." "I can't ask more of him as a captain or as a man over the last three weeks".

"They haven't been there for 28 years. What the lads played tonight was fantasy, they've made history", Dalic said. "We're not working much now so you can imagine what it will be like if we win".

"But equally we want to be a team that's hitting quarter-finals, semi-finals, finals - that was what we've aimed to do in the long term and we've proved that is possible".

The English squad is remarkably young, and by the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the team will have four years more experience under their belts. Not what's happened in the past.

"It's tough, we're gutted", he said.

Neither team came to Russian Federation being heralded as favourites but they have produced performances throughout the competition which have shown they were underestimated by the pundits.

In 1990, three years before Kane was born, England also fell short at the semifinal stage - on penalties against West Germany.

"They have come through so many different obstacles, improved and got even tighter".

Croatia booked their semi-final place against England thanks to another penalty shoot-out success, this time against hosts Russian Federation after the sides were level at 2-2 following extra-time.

Since that Argentina game, Croatia have done just enough to beat Iceland, Denmark and Russian Federation, but Dalic believes that is because they set up to frustrate his side, whereas England's more attacking style could suit them better. "Croatia deserved to win", Mark Burcher, 50, said.

Southgate has rebuilt the England team since their abject failure at Euro 2016, when Roy Hodgson's side were humiliated by Iceland in the round of 16. We can knockout games and we can get to semifinals but the next step is to go one further. If I'm honest, I don't think there are many England players who would get into this Croatian team.
