Joaquin Phoenix Confirmed to Star in Joker Origin Movie

It's official: Joaquin Phoenix will be the next Clown Prince of Crime.

But now Phoenix has reportedly finalized his deal to play Joker in this untitled standalone, which Phillips-the filmmaker behind The Hangover trilogy and the crime film War Dogs-will direct from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver. The latest report from the trade makes no mention of Scorsese but does confirm The Wolf of Wall Street producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff is on board with Richard Baratta serving as executive producer.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the project has a production budget of $55 million which puts it on the low end for superhero movies, and that it's quite different from other cape projects because no release date has been officially set.

"I don't know... it could be an interesting character".

Jared Leto, however, will be reprising his role as The Joker in the sequel for Suicide Squad and a movie on The Joker and Harley Quinn. "So I wouldn't say, hands down, no - I wouldn't do that kind of movie".

Pictures announced today that Joaquin Phoenix will star in an origin story of one of DC's most notorious Super-Villains, the Joker.

The standalone "Joker" feature will fall under a yet-to-be-announced banner of DC Comics, which gives the studio the opportunity to expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe.
