Heat Advisory And Isolated Storms Today

Prolonged heat could be expected through Thursday, with heat index values up to 105 for northeast New Jersey during the peak of the heat on Tuesday, according to the NY weather service office.

If temperature forecasts hold, New York City could blow past that and see 90 degree temperatures through Thursday.

Health officials also advise residents to check on those more at risk from high temperatures - infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, people with chronic medical conditions. "Temperatures are forecast in the mid to upper 90s through Wednesday, with heat index values in the mid to upper 90s".

"The biggest heat will be away from the ocean, in the low 90s, maybe the mid-90s up around Lawrence and Lowell", Simpson said.

Barlow added increased heat and humidity will boost the chance of thunderstorms late Wednesday.

The weather service says Thursday looks to be the first sign of the heat wave truly weakening, and by Friday and Saturday a cold front should finally arrive in our region.

"Relief is possible by the end of the week into the following weekend, " forecasters wrote.

In some areas, when the thermometer hits 95 degrees, the heat index will reach 104 degrees with dew points in the lower 70s, especially in Western and Central Massachusetts, where a heat advisory is in effect, forecasters wrote. Forecasters were concerned about a thunderstorm that was producing golf ball-size hail and damaging winds. The Excessive Heat Warning will continue for Chicago itself, where the cumulative-effects of the oppressive heat will last longer and be greater.

The weather service warned people to "take extra precautions, if you work or spend time outside".

To cope with the third day of heat, Hartford plans to offer city libraries and other public buildings as cooling centers.
