Firefighter Killed in Wisconsin Gas Explosion

A firefighter was killed and at least a dozen other people were injured when a natural gas explosion leveled at least two buildings in a Wisconsin community, authorities said Wednesday.

Firefighters and police in the community of about 30,000 had responded and Konopacki said an evacuation was underway when the blast occurred. The fire resulting from the explosion ignited some cars parked in the area.

Meantime, one firefighter was still hospitalized and in stable condition, said police Lt. Kevin Konopacki of Sun Prairie, a suburb of Madison. I thought someone had hit the building with their vehicle.

The explosion rocked the community of about 30,000 around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, sending a massive plume of smoke into the area and sparking flames.

"The Sun Prairie Fire Department is strong". He also worked as a real estate agent and owned the Barr House - destroyed in the blast.

Dane County Sheriff's Office operations manager Paul Logan said some people were taken to hospitals, but that no deaths had been reported. According to an update from the City of Sun Prairie, about 500 customers were without natural gas as of Wednesday morning.

"We are hurt", Garrison said of his team's loss of one of its veterans, "but we will come back".

Barr's wife, Abby Barr, said in a statement that Cory Barr was "the best husband a girl could ask for" and lived his life by the motto "happy wife, happy life".

The fire department said that following a search of the area there are no missing people following the blast, which caused "significant damage" to five buildings- Barr House, Glass Nickel Pizza, the Professional Building, Water Tower Chophouse and a residential home.

"On behalf of the whole state, we say we love you", the governor said.

The Red Cross reported it was setting up a reception area for evacuees at Sun Prairie High School.

"It was a very complex situation", she said.
