The Manchester City forward is yet to score for his country in nearly three years and missed two clear-cut chances against Sweden.

Jones, who made just nine global appearances for Wales, believes Sterling relies to heavily on his speed and slammed his finishing so far this World Cup.

It was an otherwise-promising performance for Sterling, arguably his best of the competition, as he repeatedly found pockets of space and was a consistent danger against a solid defence. "Of course he hasn't scored the goals he would have liked to score but for myself and the players he has been a crucial part of the way we have been playing".

The Manchester City winger has come under fire by pundits and supporters, even before the World Cup started, when his choice of tattoos were questioned by British tabloids.

While he finally got an assist at the ongoing edition, his performances have not been up to scratch and many fans have called on Gareth Southgate to drop him in favour of Marcus Rashford.

Eric Dier believes there should be no debate about the displays Sterling has put in. It's so clear to see if you were to watch back our games, the importance he has to the team.

He said on Twitter: "Today, I want to thank all that have and continue to support England as a team, this has helped us achieve what can only be described as a dream!" Sir Geoff, a World Cup victor in 1966, added: "Sterling was terrific".

Sterling has never been a popular figure in England, with many Liverpool fans still not over his acrimonious departure to Manchester City two seasons ago. "I think he has been fantastic, his consistency has been incredible and I think he fully deserves it".

He was rested for the 1-0 defeat to Belgium but restored to the line-up as England entered the knockout rounds.

"I think Raheem Sterling is an important player because he is fast and unsafe alongside Harry Kane", Dalic said in a press conference Sunday.
