Donald Trump Says America's 'Biggest Foe' Is the European Union

Donald Trump named the European Union a "foe" of the United States during an interview at his golf club in Scotland that aired on Sunday. "Now, you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe", the POTUS tells CBS News.

Asked whether he would press his Russian counterpart to send to the USA members of the Russian military intelligence agency accused of hacking Hillary Clinton's failed presidential campaign, he said: "Well, I might".

The U.S. doesn't have an extradition treaty with Moscow and can't force the Russians to hand over citizens.

After tens of thousands of people marched peacefully against Trump in central London, more protests continued on Saturday.

Near Trump's hotel, police roped off a group of about 60 mostly male pro-Trump demonstrators waving American flags.

Will Trump recognize Putin's annexation of Crimea, or merely fawn over him in post-conversation interviews?

The U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Jon Huntsman, told NBC'S " Meet the Press" that the meeting was "an attempt to see if we can defuse and take some of the drama, and quite frankly some of the danger, out of the relationship right now".

A billboard is pictured along President Donald Trump and Russia's President Vladimir Putin's route to the summit in Helsinki. "I'm not going with high expectations".

The U.S. homeland security secretary said on Saturday there are no signs that Russian Federation is targeting this year's midterm elections with the same "scale or scope" it targeted the 2016 presidential election.

Trump declined to offer his goals for the first summit between the two world leaders, but promised that "nothing bad" would come out of it. Trump and Putin have talked previously on the sidelines of global gatherings.

"I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade", he said in an interview to CBS News while in Scotland.

He also said Russian Federation "is a foe in certain respects" and that China "is a foe economically". It doesn't mean anything.

"That doesn't mean they are bad". Trump has been reluctant to criticize Putin over the years and has described him as a competitor in recent days.

He said the Russian leader in the past has said the "Russian state" was not involved in the interference, but "we'll have to find out now what he means", since the military intelligence agency GRU has now been directly accused of hacking into computers of Trump's political opponents at the Democratic National Committee.

Trump appeared to place blame on the Democratic National Committee for the hacking attack that has been linked to Russian Federation: "I think the DNC should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be hacked".

Putin is regarded as having created a culture of violence and impunity that has resulted in the killing of some Russian journalists.

Democratic lawmakers urged Trump to cancel the get-together with Putin.

Nonetheless, Bolton said the indictment is a "serious matter" that Trump needs to talk about it with Putin. The leaders also met last fall during a separate summit in Vietnam.

"We have always said that we need dialogue with Russian Federation".

Putin could play on those tendencies during their meeting and reject the charges against his agents as well.

Mr Huntsman said the meeting will go on, arguing that some worldwide issues can't be solved without Russian engagement.

"The collective blood pressure between the United States and Russian Federation is off-the-charts high so it's a good thing these presidents are getting together", he said.

But he said he found it "hard to believe" Mr Putin did not know about the alleged election hacking and the subject would be mentioned.

The outlines of what would be a hugely controversial deal have emerged in press reports that suggest Putin is keen to exploit Trump's desire to pull USA troops out of Syria by offering to rein in Iranian influence there.

Trump also congratulated France for winning the Football World Cup for the second time and congratulated Putin for a "truly great" tournament.
