Cop under investigation after ignoring woman's pleas for help from drunk man

An investigation is underway after a woman who was harassed at an IL park for wearing a shirt featuring the Puerto Rico flag said a police officer ignored her requests for help. The video shows a man angrily approaching a woman who is filming him as he yells "You're not gonna change us" while a nearby police officer stands by his vehicle and looks away as the distressed woman calls out for help.

On Tuesday, the hashtag #MericaMax went viral regarding the harassment of a Chicago woman named Mia Irizarry, who was celebrating her 24th birthday in the Forest Preserves of Cook County, when a man started berating her about her shirt.

Irizarry filmed the video about a month ago, but it has gained recent traction and since been watched more than a million times.

"We will be looking into this incident as our offices in DC are in contact with local and state authorities, demanding that this officer be expelled from the police force", Rossello said. The unresponsive officer seen in the video was reassigned to desk duty pending his conduct review.

Trybus was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct, according to the Forest Preserves.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", he said. "Are you a United States citizen?" "Please, officer", she says. "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing", she said.

The exchange continued as the man got angrier and followed the woman away from the picnic area, yelling at her not to wear "that shit" in the U.S. While both pleaded to the police officer who was pacing languidly around them-with Irizarry calling for help as the angry stranger asked "Is she an American citizen"-the officer walked away".

Ironically, the initial officer wound up taking the official report from Irizarry, who pointed out that she asked for his assistance multiple times.

"As you can see, the police, he's not even grabbing him", Irizarry says to her viewers. "You're not gonna change us, you know that?" he says, insinuating that she is an interloper.

A woman officer then stepped in, telling the intoxicated man that Irizarry has a permit and cautioning him that he could be arrested "for not being compliant". "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here".

Irizarry can be heard explaining to the officer that the incident began when they had asked the group Trybus was with if they could move because they had a permit for the area.

The man again approaches Irizarry in a threatening manner while she begs him to stay away.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello reacted to the video Monday on Twitter.

"I believe this officer did not do this duty, and I will not accept anything other than this officer's termination", Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo said. When she tries to explain that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, and therefore a part of the United States, he interjects: "We don't own Puerto Rico".
