Astros option Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno

Astros option Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno

Fortunately for the Astros, they can afford to send Giles down as a teaching lesson.

The Houston Astros have optioned relief pitcher Ken Giles to Class AAA Fresno, the team announced Wednesday.

Lefthander Cionel Perez will take Giles' spot on the roster. The late reliever that the Phillies traded in 2015 for a package that included Vince Velasquez had given up 36 hits and 17 earned runs over 30 2/3 innings this season with a 4.99 ERA.

The Houston Astros won Tuesday's game against the A's in ridiculous fashion, but it wasn't all smiles for the AL West leaders. His struggles have continued in 2018, as Giles has posted a 4.99 ERA in 34 appearances. A frustrated Giles visibly appeared to cuss as he left the mound, potentially at Hinch, though there's been no confirmation of that.

Giles' troubles date back to the playoffs last season.

"I did hear about it", he said, via the Houston Chronicle.

Then, May 27, Giles came into the game with an 8-3 lead in the ninth over the Indians and allowed three runs to score before leaving without recording an out. I didn't hear anything. I don't know, man.

From a service time vantage point, there's little implication for Giles' long-term future. As such, he'll still be eligible for arbitration twice more before qualifying as a free agent following the 2020 season, regardless of how long he spends in Triple-A.
