Arsene Wenger says he regrets staying at Arsenal for 22 years

The 68-year-old won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and reached the final of the Champions League during his first decade at the club, but Winterburn believes that it was the challenge of leading Arsenal to the top of English football again following their move to the Emirates Stadium which caused him to stay on for so long.

The Frenchman ended his 22-year reign as the head coach of the Gunners at the end of last season following a series of poor result in all competitions.

Wenger continued: "I regret having sacrificed everything I did because I realise I've hurt a lot of people around me".

He added, "I've had the opportunity numerous times to be France manager".

'I've always been more interested in the day-to-day aspect of management. "But deep down though, the obsessed man is selfish in his pursuit of what he loves". He ignores a lot of other things.

Wenger told French radio station RTL in a wide-ranging interview that he may have been better off seeking out a new challenge sooner.

"They have all the qualities; they're intelligent, they know football, they have the excellent skillset, but do they want to sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed?"

A "Wenger Out" campaign started as Gunners fans became frustrated at the club regularly failing to compete for the league title but Emery signalled a new start with an 8-0 pre-season win over Boreham Wood on Saturday.

According to Sky Sports: "He is now contemplating whether a move into worldwide management would suit him and expects to make a decision on his future "in the next few months".

There are long-term links with Paris-Saint Germain, who appointed Thomas Tuchel as head coach this summer, as well as a possible return to Japan where Wenger managed before his move to Arsenal in 1996. He said: "I'm asking myself the same question!" In a club, you take charge of 60.
