World Cup teams could train on Vancouver Island

World Cup teams could train on Vancouver Island

Mexico previously hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986.

The announcement was made on Wednesday morning at the 68th FIFA Congress, just one day before the opening of the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the opening ceremony of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which will kick off in Russia on Thursday, and watch the opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow. Their lone opponent was Morocco.

"It's an opportunity to bring the world together and highlight how well things work between Canada, Mexico and the United States", Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said of the bid approved by Federation Internationale de Football Association, which came amid complex trade negotiations between the countries. Mexico and Canada will each host 10 games, while America will get 60.

Potential host cities include New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Mexico City, and Montreal; but not Chicago, after the Windy City pulled out of the North American bid.

She said a joint Canada-USA-Mexico bid will provide challenges, "especially for transportation", she said.

Bid leaders say 5.8 million tickets would be sold, generating record gate money of $2.5 billion.

They could serve as pre-World Cup training base camps for the national teams that will be based at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton or Safeco Field in Seattle.

The average stadium capacity for the tournament is 55,000, with the largest the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, best known as the home of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team.

Bid leader Cordeiro said his team was "humbled" by the result and predicted the tournament would put football "on a new and sustainable path for generations to come".

Patriots and Revs owner Robert Kraft is listed as the honorary chairman of the North American bid, and the Kraft Group launched a nonprofit, Boston 2026, to help advocate for the city (and Gillette Stadium's) inclusion in the World Cup plans.

Most the World Cup games in 2026 will take place in the United States and it will be a 48 team World Cup - which should open the tournament's doors for the first time to many countries.

United States venues include the Pasadena Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, venue for the 1994 World Cup final.

Among the 22 other host city finalists are Washington and New York/New Jersey, both of which hosted matches in the 1994 World Cup, the last held in North America.

But which cities and stadiums will host games at the tournament is still being determined.

While Canada has never hosted-or even qualified for-the men's World Cup, it can count on its more experienced co-hosts and current NAFTA partners.
