Woman caught transporting children in dog kennels

Leimome Cheeks, 62, was taken into custody after a passerby filmed the moment her two grandchildren crawled from the cramped cages in the trunk of her auto, local station WREG reported.

Cheeks allegedly admitted to putting the children in kennels but told police she "made sure to check on them periodically", according to ABC News.

The children told police there was no room in the backseat so their grandmother told them to get inside the dog cages. Temperatures in the area reached about 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

The viral video shows a woman standing by the trunk of a Ford Explorer and holding the door of a dog kennel open as a young child clambers out feet-first. He called her "a nice lady" and said he "can't see her doing that". "For them to be in the hot vehicle like that in cages is sad", neighbor Nikita Blake told WREG.

A concerned citizen shot the video and forwarded it to the police. Two neighbors told WMC Cheeks was a "super good neighbor. Wow", Skylarr Blake, a neighbor, told WREG.

Police say the children were not harmed. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", one neighbor said.

Cheeks was arrested in Memphis on Sunday morning and is due to appear in court on Monday morning.

People convicted of child endangerment charges are typically sentenced to between one and 10 years in jail, depending on the seriousness of the case.

"I think she needs some help". Johnson said the children were not in the custody of the Department of Children's Services, but the staff is still "investigating the situation".
