It's Vettel's fourth pole on the Ile Notre-Dame, but his first since 2013, when he was on his way to a fourth straight world championship for Red Bull. From the number of red flags with the prancing pony logo, the Italian squad remains the clear favourite in the grandstands.

It is his third win this season, and a strong riposte after Ferrari failed to perform at their best in Spain and were beaten by Red Bull in Monaco. "And for Scuderia Ferrari this track and this country means a lot, as this is the place where Gilles Villeneuve came from".

"I don't think the hypersoft is a good race tyre".

"I got the job done. I'm happy for them". "Starting from the first row is good for this race and happy to go for it tomorrow".

The Englishman, who arrived in North America with a 14-point lead over Vettel, will now head to the next round in France trailing his Ferrari rival by one point. "It's great when you have a session like that".

The Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas will also start in the front row.

Lance Stroll of Montreal, the first Canadian to race in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve left in 2006, qualified 17th as his Williams team's struggles continued.

Hamilton is looking to equal Schumacher's record of seven career Canadian GP wins. The Briton has won the last three on the track that seems to suit the Mercedes vehicle with its heavy braking after long straightaways and tight chicanes.

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good vehicle, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

He retired in Azerbaijan after a collision with Ricciardo and in China he tangled with Hamilton and Vettel, finishing fifth after a 10-second penalty demoted him from fourth, while Ricciardo won the race.

"We extracted the best we could out of qualifying".

Red Bull believe their auto will be even stronger in race trim than it was in qualifying, when Verstappen was less than two tenths behind Vettel in the Q3 shoot-out when all of the leading cars ran hypersofts.

"Today was a good day, the vehicle is working very well". Yesterday we were a bit in trouble.

On the basis of Friday practice, Sebastian Vettel does not see himself as a contender for victory even though Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen set the second fastest time. Hahaha but so grateful everyone was safe today and no one got hurt!

Behind the leading cars, Renault took a one-two finish in the "Class B" race, with Nico Hulkenberg leading home Sainz to claim seventh and eighth for the team.
