To avenge being humiliated over her dark complexion, woman poisons five relatives

Surwase, who was married two years ago, was always taunted by her family members and other relatives about her dark complexion and her lack of cooking skills, police said.

A 23-year-old woman from Khalapur in Maharashtra's Raigad district was arrested on Friday for allegedly poisoning the food served at a feast hosted by a relative on 18 June, killing five guests.

The accused, who is divorced, believes that her first marriage ended because Shinde had "cast aspersions on her character", the police said.

A photo of alleged offender Pradnya Survase. She also said her in-laws and the Manes had spread lies about her in Latur and that had led to her first marriage breaking down. Shinde and her family were among the guests. Food was served from 2:30pm to 11:30pm.

Soon after consuming the food, guests started complaining of stomach-ache and started vomiting. About 88 people were hospitalised. After the serum test reports of two patients had indicated food poisoning due to organophosphate compound, a pesticide, the police had begun probing if there was a foul play.

The deceased have been identified as Gopinath Nakure and four children - Kalyani Shingude, Pragati Shinde, Rishikesh Shinde and Vijay Shinde.

"We learnt that those who had eaten between 4:30pm and 6pm were suffering from nausea and other issues. She could not serve the poisoned dal to her husband, mother-in-law and Subhash Mane as they had already eaten food".

Police questioned Mane's relatives who had been serving food at the time.

While talking to ANI, Raigad Superintendent of Police, Anil Paraskar said that the woman has confessed to her crime. "The plastic bag in which she carried the poison was thrown behind the house", a police official said. "Those she wanted to kill ate the food before she could mix the poison", said Kaingade.

Mane is the brother of the accused Pradnya's mother-in-law, Sindhu Survase. "Pradnya then made a decision to kill them and mixed the poison in the dal container", he said.
