Raptors hiring Nick Nurse as head coach

Toronto was rumored to desire former Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer, but Bud signed on to coach Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks. Casey, who had led the Raptors to three consecutive 50-win seasons, was named coach of the Detroit Pistons on Monday.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors are hiring assistant coach Nick Nurse to replace Dwane Casey, who was sacked just over a month ago. So, their final two candidates were current assistant coach Nick Nurse and Spurs assistant Ettore Messina. He won a pair of championships in the British Basketball League in 1996 and 2000, as well as D-League titles in 2011 and 2013. Nevermind that Casey is a legitimate contender for Coach of the Year-General Manager Masai Ujiri felt the team needed a new leader.

Lewenberg noted that if the Raptors passed on Nurse as head coach, they risked losing him altogether as he finished atop a Yahoo poll from early April among executives that tabbed him as the top head coaching prospect among National Basketball Association assistants. He joined the Raptors organization in 2013 and has served as an assistant on the staff alongside Dwane Casey since then.

Nurse, 50, spent 12 seasons coaching in Europe and has six seasons of coaching experience in the G-League, where he won two championships and a Coach of the Year award. "I know where we started".
