Raptors hire Nick Nurse as new head coach

The team and Nick Nurse are in the process of elevating Nurse from assistant under the deposed Dwane Casey to the top job, sources confirmed to Postmedia on Tuesday morning after an initial ESPN report.

Toronto has chose to promote Dwane Casey's old assistant, and will hire Nick Nurse as the team's ninth head coach in franchise history according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Nurse, a long-time assistant under Casey, was one of the first people interviewed by president Masai Ujiri and general manager Bobby Webster and was the leading candidate throughout much of the hiring process. Adrian Wojnarowski reported shortly after that the Raptors are hiring Nurse, so consider it done.

The terms of the deal were not announced yet.

A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Nurse was 23 when he became head coach of Grand View College, making him the youngest college basketball coach in the U.S.

Nurse coached in Europe for 11 years starting in 1996.

Toronto's coaching search reportedly had narrowed down to Nurse and San Antonio assistant coach Ettore Messina. He also won a pair of titles in the G League with two different teams and was coach of the year there, too. He is the franchise's all-time leader in wins, winning percentage, games coached and playoff games coached (51).
