Pistons hire ex-Raps coach Casey

The 61-year-old finished his tenure as the team's winningest coach but could never get it over the hump in the playoffs.

Casey himself was sacked from the Raptors after the Cavaliers swept them in the Eastern Conference playoffs after seven seasons in Toronto. And proving his best days are ahead of him.

The Pistons parted ways with Stan Van Gundy last month after a four year run with the team as President of Basketball Operations and head coach. Last month, he was named the Coach of the Year by the National Basketball Coaches Association.

"Dwane is one of the most successful and highly respected coaches in our league", Pistons owner Tom Gores said. Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record.

Under Casey, the Raptors won four Atlantic Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons.

Dwane Casey is the Pistons' new coach, the team announced Monday. Part of getting the Pistons back on track will be fixing their offence, which ranked 22nd in both field goal percentage and points per game last season.

Casey was identified as a target for the Pistons early on as they look to reshape their organization from the president's role on down, meeting with the team's search committee in late May and then with Pistons ownership this week. His teams qualified for the playoffs in 11 of those 14 seasons.

According to the report, Casey will receive a five-year deal. In the summer of 1998, he helped to guide Japan to its first appearance in the FIBA World Championship, which marked a first for Japan in over 30 years.
