GOP moderate says tentative immigration deal with conservatives

McConnell suggested in his speech on Friday, "Now I've outlined what I've done in 16 months, imagine what more we can do if we put one foot in front of the other and keep our eye on the long game".

House rules require seven legislative days for a discharge petition to ripen once it gets to 218 signatures, after which any signatory can call it up as a privileged resolution on the second or fourth Monday of the month.

Ryan's promise of a vote comes as the party heads into a volatile election season, with immigration a central issue in campaigns across the country.

May 21 was the deadline to register to vote in Tuesday's primary.

The discharge petition process allows a group of at least 218 members to overrule the speaker and force a vote on any issue. But the chances they'll be able to do so appear minimal.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan dismissed an attempt to override leadership on immigration Thursday as having no chance of becoming law.

The letter came shortly before House conservatives, moderates and leaders met Thursday to negotiate a possible solution, and as a faction of Republicans supporting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program teamed up with Democrats on a petition that would force House votes on the issue. And without Democratic support in the Senate, it'd be impossible to get the proposal to Trump's desk.

But he said the starting point is the immigration principles laid out by Trump early this year: aggressive immigration security, including the construction of a wall along the Southwest border with Mexico, and a clamp-down on allowing family members overseas from joining relatives living legally in the United States. But, if Thursday's meetings don't go well, moderates may abandon the negotiating strategy and push forward with the discharge petition.

This would be in line with polling that shows Trump enjoying nearly universal job approval among self-identified Republicans - higher than all but one post-World War II president enjoyed at this stage in their tenures from their fellow party members.

And while McCaskill and other Democrats have taken some criticism from their Republican challengers for taking money from the Hollywood elite, GOP senators have not shied away from taking high-profile Hollywood money. Sen. Hard issues included which Dreamers would qualify for protections and whether they eventually could become US citizens, lawmakers said. The new visa would let the Dreamers remain in the country for eight years.

"Things that become law and stay law are bipartisan", Barton said.

In the central state of Iowa, Democrat businessman Fred Hubbell will represent his party in the governorship race against incumbent Republican Kim Reynolds, who took over the reins after former governor Terry Branstad was appointed the USA ambassador to China.

Barton said the discussion didn't delve into detail on how to define the Dreamer population that would be covered under the bill.

Trump announced he would end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed almost 700,000 young immigrants to obtain permits to work and temporarily stay in the U.S. But the program largely continues temporarily, pending an unresolved legal battle. Most could give fairly specific answers, as you'll see below.

And Trump has shown recent interest in making border security and immigration key issues in the upcoming Midterms.

"I would say there's some loose consensus right now", said Rep. Carlos Curbelo, R-Fla., a leader of the centrists' effort to either strike a deal with conservatives or force immigration votes. The closed-door negotiations followed, with members genuinely expressing optimism that both sides were giving talks an honest shot.

So-called independent voters, i.e., those who decline to sate a party preference, are not to be confused with those who register with minor parties such as Libertarian, American Independent, Green Party, Peace and Freedom, etc.

But the Senate has already proven a four-pillar probably can't pass that chamber.

"Democrats' enthusiasm matches Republicans' in 2014 and 2010", said Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducts the Journal/NBC poll with his Democratic counterpart Peter Hart.

I believe we will get those signatures tonight if the Republicans are unable to come up with an agreement, Sinema said Thursday on KTAR News 92.3 FM's Arizona's Morning News. And you have you saying that you represent a lot of Republicans who want, you know, a more accepting form of immigration policy.

"I hope the wounds that have been created here can heal", Rounds said.
