England training notes suggest Sterling could be dropped for Rashford

England boss Gareth Southgate added: "We had to keep monitoring Dele, he was feeling a little bit of an issue just before half-time, but he felt he could carry on and I thought the runs that he was making and the way he was pressing the ball was still causing a problem".

He says he would leave out Sterling for the 20-year-old, or consider playing them both alongside Harry Kane up top.

The England manager took training at Spartak Zelenogorsk on Thursday, despite the discomfort of a dislocated shoulder.

Sterling struggled for long periods of England's dramatic 2-1 victory over Tunisia on Monday night and was replaced by Marcus Rashford with 25 minutes remaining.

"I'd play him ahead of Raheem Sterling as well, I would, I know Sterling's off the back of a good season".

England play Panama on Sunday June 24 in Nizhny Novgorod.

While Southgate is apparently relaxed about revealing his team and chose to inform his players of his choice 48 hours before the Tunisia fixture, Holland is understood to be the driving force behind maintaining secrecy over selection.

Rashford strengthened his own case in England's final pre-World Cup friendly against Costa Rica, capping a lively performance with a spectacular long-range goal.

England's training base at Spartak Zelenogorsk now includes a different perimeter fence. Dedryck Boyata is expected to start again against Tunisia on Sunday, but Kompany may be considered for a return in what could prove to be the game that decides which team tops Group G.
