Defending champions Germany arrive in Russia for World Cup

Mexico hosted the 1986 World Cup, while the United States was awarded the tournament in 1994 but Canada, who have appeared just once at the tournament, have never hosted.

In eight year's time, numerous young rising stars of the United States men's national team should be in their prime as it is expected to be the first World Cup with 48 teams.

Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal were the three Canadian cities designated in the bid to possibly host games in the 2026 tournament, which is expanding to 48 team, up from the current 32-team format. It will be the first World Cup since the 2002 edition in South Korea and Japan in which multiple countries will host.

Both Mexico (1970 and 1986) and the United States (1994) have previously hosted World Cups.

"Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup in history".

Vancouver will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government, citing concerns over the possible costs of being a host city, was unable to come to terms with the bid committee. Chicago and Minneapolis also withdrew, citing similar worries.

Earlier, US Soccer President Carlos Cordeiro has said his bid would generate $14bn in revenue and make an $11bn profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association.

"Together we have done everything in our power to make the tournament a top-notch event, be it for a player, a fan, or a fan in front of the TV", he said.

FIFA's hosting selection process was revamped in the wake of recent scandals enveloping the world governing body of soccer. That would bring each of FIFA's 211 members $50 million.

The 80 matches in the 2026 tournament, involving an expanded roster of 48 teams, will be held in stadiums scattered throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The 2026 award is also a victory for many of FIFA's corporate partners, which will have the advantage of more teams and the world's biggest media market.

A spokesperson said: "We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. If given the opportunity, I know they will welcome you". All of the proposed stadiums exist already.

Nine of the 14 stadiums included in Morocco's bid were yet to be built, while the remaining five required "significant renovation or upgrading". FIFA's technical reports gave Morocco's bid a 2.7 score out of 5, compared to North America's 4.0.

Morocco, on the other hard, was viewed as a higher-risk choice.

And when it comes to matters on the field, it's OK to dream of Hershey native Christian Pulisic - or maybe even Media-born Union defender Auston Trusty - playing for the United States in a World Cup at Lincoln Financial Field.
