Cancer Survivors Celebrated In Relay For Life

Silipigni raised $72,000 for Relay for Life, the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, where team members take turns walking around the track. "Relay For Life is a chance for communities to recognize and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them".

"We're thinking it will be a relay reunion to get teams that used to participate to come back and raise funds", she said.

"If you are a cancer survivor, even if you have not registered yet, please join us", said a news release from the event organizers.

Survivors, those who died as a result of cancer and their caregivers were also honored during the relay.

"(Relay For Life) helps lengthen lives", said Lynn, a vendor from the Grand Island Relay who brought her Tiki bar stand with its Hawaiian fare to the Greater Niagara Relay. Many favorite activities that are held each year at the Relay's Night of Hope, such as the games, campsite decorating contest, luminaria ceremony and silent auction, will return. "This event helps people bond together, and Miami County has been very supportive to its survivors".

As community champion for the Sydney Relay for Life, taking place Friday at Centre 200 in Sydney, Phillips will be one of the guest speakers.

Nationally, there are 415 events with 110,000 participants who have collectively raised more than $500 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. "Oh my gosh, that was so huge", Jackson laughed recalling last year's event. Teams also will have fundraisers at their campsites. There were days when my mind and my body said "no", but I kept going.

On June 8 starting at 4 p.m., the Relay for Life 2018 events will kick-off at Minot State University. This is the second year that Mcdonald hosted the relay at its downtown park.

"If people want to know more before the event opens, they'll have to get involved in the planning committee", Hetzler exclaimed.

Consider coming out this Saturday evening, whether you are a member of a Relay team or not.

"Newtown has such a wonderful and supportive close-knit community of survivors and caregivers", he said.

Braga found out that the invasive cancer would need to be treated with chemotherapy.

"I was exhausted, but I was also caring for my two young granddaughters and thought, 'Now I know why you don't have children when you are 46, '" she recalled. "I'm very lucky because not a lot of people get to do a job they're passionate about", Carey said.
