Breaking down Canada's potential 2026 World Cup venues

Announced Wednesday morning, Canada joined forces with the United States and Mexico to form a "United Bid" for the 2026 World Cup and ended up beating out fellow finalist Morocco 134-65.

The city might also be considered as a base camp location for one of the qualifying nations, a field that Federation Internationale de Football Association intends to expand from 32 to 48 teams for 2026.

The last time the USA hosted the World Cup was in 1994, with Brazil winning the tournament at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

As a result, Fifa's executive committee is no longer responsible for the final say on which country is awarded a World Cup.

The plan is that Canada and Mexico would each host 10 matches, while 60 matches would be played in the United States.

As an Italian-Canadian, however, the news that the North American bid had been selected for the 2026 World Cup hit Filato in a particularly soft spot when it arrived at around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The United States hosted the tournament in 1994 while Mexico has hosted in 1970 and 1986.

Earlier in the year, there were fears that opposition to President Donald Trump could endanger the US-led bid to host the soccer tournament, but those fears were allayed at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday.

It is the fifth time Morocco has bid to host the tournament.

"And in that spirit we wish all Russian hosts and all the teams competing here the very best of luck".

"You look at the assets we've got in England, or the United Kingdom, in terms of grounds: some of the best grounds in world football, the best training grounds".

The FA was among the first to congratulate the US' joint bid with Mexico and Canada. "The men's World Cup will take this country to a place it's never been before". Local leaders Chiefs President Mark Donovan, Sporting Kansas City President and CEO Jake Reid, Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Mo., and Mayor David Alvey of Kansas City, Kan., are hosting a news conference, and may discuss the possibility that the Kansas City metro could host a match.

If Kansas City is chosen, matches would be played at Arrowhead Stadium. In 2002, Japan and South Korea both were granted automatic bids when they co-hosted the World Cup.

"Today, I'm 17 years old and I play for the (Canadian) men's national team".

Catlett expects discussions with U.S. Soccer over Jacksonville's potential role in supporting events to start within the next two to three months.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by U.S. president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet.
