Xbox Reveals 'Adaptive Pad' For Accessible Gaming

While the Adaptive controller carries the Xbox branding it can also be used with Windows 10 machines, so it has potential to open up more aspects of PC gaming to people with disabilities.

"For gamers with limited mobility, finding controller solutions to fit their individual needs has been challenging", said Spencer on Xbox Wire. As the name suggests it's designed for accessibility and targets gamers with limited mobility.

"Microsoft's new Xbox Adaptive Controller will make a real difference to disabled people, particularly those with a muscle-wasting condition whose movements will become increasingly limited over time". It's compatible with Xbox One and Windows PC, and its compatible with every major third-party controller for players with disabilities now available like PDP's One Handed Joystick, Quadstick's Game Controller.

A key feature of the adaptive controller is that it can be customised for the needs of different disabled users. Microsoft took feedback from various foundations and hospitals such as AbleGamers, Craig Hospital, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation and Warfighter Engaged. Eventually, the controller passed to the next phase where the designers had to change how they look at the controller and made a decision to build it first party rather than farming the design out to a third-party device maker, despite having no clear idea how many Microsoft might sell.

Spencer continued, "The Xbox Adaptive Controller has been years in the making, though we realize that this is only one step along our journey of inclusive design and that we have more work ahead".

Microsoft has been doing loads of stuff lately to empower people who deserve extra care. These buttons can be mapped to any functions that a gamer may desire to trigger and has been created to work with many third party solutions that can simply be paired with the adaptive controller. As games grew more sophisticated, so did the controllers. A specialized controller for those unable to play video games due to mobility issues.

You can also find compatible foot pedals and one-handed joysticks to use with the Adaptive Controller.
