Hughes has announced a year-long campaign by his administration to combat stigma associated with mental illness and addiction, and to support those who are impacted.

Far too many students in SA are living with mental health problems and without the support they need to get the most out of high school or university.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, 31.2 million work days were lost due to illness in 2016/17, with 12.5 million of those due to stress, depression or anxiety experienced by employees.

They note that the nation's jails and homeless populations are filled with people suffering from mental illness, which they called "unacceptable".

As an older sister to siblings who have struggled with behavioral and mental health issues, Hernandez said bringing awareness to these issues is not only important for the people struggling with them, but for those who can be there to help.

"This poignant moment of reflection, a first in United Kingdom radio, is a wonderful opportunity to help us improve how we support each other emotionally".

According to MHA, one in five adults have a mental health condition, which amounts to more than the populations of NY and Florida combined.

She said when people ask how they can make another person seek help, Trudeau said "planting seeds" to help them understand their illness are the first steps to helping people help themselves.

Though information about mental health will be on hand at each one, project co-ordinator David Gabert says "the focus of these events is to provide opportunities for our community to find new ways to engage in activities".

Emily, who was diagnosed with bipolar two and a half years ago, said: "I am doing this for two reasons - I have received lots of support in the last five years and I want to give something back".

With summer around the corner, the school district is making sure that parents are engaged in looking for signs of mental health issues by offering resources through the district or directing them to physicians that could help out, district spokeswoman Yelitza Pena said.

Her aim is to raise awareness of mental health issues as well as money for the Mental Health Foundation, which is behind Mental Health Awareness Week, and the mental health charity MIND.

The message is to mark Mental Health Awareness Week during the industry's Radio Audio Week.
