Turkey's Erdogan says president needs to be effective in monetary policy

"The DFB of course respects the special situation for our players with migrant backgrounds, but football and the DFB stands for values that Mr Erdogan does not sufficiently respect", DFB president Reinhard Grindel said.

"That's why it's not good that global players allow themselves to be manipulated for his electoral campaign. It certainly hasn't helped the DFB's integration efforts". Photos of the meeting were used on social media by Erdogan's campaign team. Veteran Greens lawmaker Cem Ozdemir, with Turkish roots, described them as tasteless and embarrassing.

Germany team coordinator Oliver Bierhoff also expressed concern over the photos and said he would speak with the players.

As seen in the images below, the pair were pictured with Turkey president Tayyip Erdogan, who has received criticism and widespread condemnation amid ongoing measures following elections to tighten his grip on control of the country.

Turkey has called snap presidential and parliamentary elections for June 24 and polls show Erdogan as the strongest candidate to win the presidential vote. "Posing with the Turkish president is not exemplary behaviour and is not appropriate for German national players", said Social Democrat deputy leader Ralf Stegner. "We have to be fair, there is no intention whatsoever to get them involved", he told a briefing in London on Monday.

"That is one of the reasons he met them yesterday (Sunday), to ask them how many goals they scored etc, it was football chatting but I have to make it clear they are not part of our campaign and there is no intention of bringing them into our campaign".
