The couple has chosen the head of the Episcopal Church - the Most Rev. Bishop Michael Bruce Curry - to give the address at their wedding, Kensington Palace revealed on Saturday.

Their choice of Curry, 65, is likely to transform the tone of the church ceremony. The historic parish was the first African American Episcopal church built south of the Mason-Dixon line, and welcomed both freed and enslaved people when it was formed in 1824.

"The bishop is honoured and thrilled to be participating", according to SCMP. The church has around 1.9 million members and is based in New York City.

Curry is the son of the late-Rev.

Curry is a socially progressive bishop who has frequently compared the black and LGBT civil rights movements. Curry has followed in his father's activist footsteps.

Bishop Curry gained notoriety outside of the Episcopal Church with his acclaimed 2012 General Convention address, in which he talked about the world's need for some "crazy Christians". "He's a fabulous spokesmen, not just for the Episcopal Church, but his constant, consistent message is about God's abundant love for everybody", Lee said.

The Episcopal Church is an offshoot of the Church of England in the United States and forms part of the broader Anglican Communion worldwide.

Curry has defended the American church's stance on gay marriage. "And this conjures that up again, and brings pain".

An American bishop who has been active on social issues like immigration and same-sex marriage will be a part of Britain's royal wedding.

He called Curry "a brilliant pastor, stunning preacher and someone with a great gift for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ".

It has been announced that US Bishop, Michael Bruce Curry, will be part of the team who officiate the couple.
