PM Modi to commence a visit to Russian Federation on May 21

Close on the heels of his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an informal setting in Wuhan in April, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Russian Federation on 21 May for an informal summit with President Vladimir Putin at the beach resort of Sochi.

According to the reports, PM Modi's visiting Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend an informal summit.

"This informal Summit in Sochi between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin is in keeping with the tradition of regular consultations between India and Russian Federation at the highest levels", the MEA further stated.

In Moscow, the Kremlin in a similar statement said: "There are plans to discuss key issues of developing Russian-Indian very privileged strategic partnership and also to exchange views on vital issues of the global and regional agenda".

Besides, the USA decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and its ramifications on India-Russia have also caused new worries in New Delhi.

Informal summits are in - or so it would seem.

Russian Federation is also said to be upset with India since New Delhi has in recent years diversified its defence purchases rather than remaining dependent on Moscow.

In April, Modi held an informal summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping for two days at Wuhan, where they agreed to maintain "strategic communication". "Instead, the focus" will be on discussions on the "big picture" globally, according to observers.

The Modi-Putin summit is taking place under the shadow of the growing friendship between Moscow and Islamabad, much to the discomfort of India. The withdrawal of U.S. from the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran and the impending summit of President Donald Trump with North Korea's Kim Jong-un has introduced more variables with uncertain outcome. This could impact India's acquisition of defence spares as well as other defence deals in the pipeline, like the S 400 anti-missile system.

The recent developments have also meant that numerous powers have also been holding talks with Putin.
