Newcastle owner Ashley eager for Benitez to stay

The Italian's has been the subject of constant speculation that his second season at Stamford Bridge could well be his last after a disappointing season which sees the Blues finishing fifth place and missing out on a Champions League spot in the process. The medical staff, fitness coaches and sports scientists have done a great job because we haven't had many injuries.

The Belgian seemed to be the only visiting player up for the game and, moments later, he was equal to Mohamed Diame's shot, tipping it round the post for a corner.

The 58-year-old hopes to remain at the club next season, and said his squad would need reinforcements, especially with goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, striker Islam Slimani and winger Kenedy all set to return to their parent clubs when their loan deals expire.

"I am working with my players this season and I think it is not right to tell something about this". For this season, for sure, now we have to play the last game in the FA Cup and as you know very well I am repeating always the same thing.

While Benitez, the ex of Chelsea's dugout was outmanoeuvring Antonio Conte's limp Londoners, two ex-Chelsea forwards, Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke, were scoring for Liverpool to widen the gap. This season, until he left, he helped me a lot. Conte antagonised the Portuguese coach after reclaiming the Premier League crown at the first attempt by stating in July that he wanted to avoid "the Mourinho season" in this campaign.

BOSS Antonio Conte cut a forlorn figure as Chelsea's slim hopes of reaching the Champions League were dashed. "There is another year on my contract and I will try to do my best to move forward".

He added: "The other team was more determined than us and I think that today I wasn't able to convey that determination to my players, to play the last game against Newcastle".

Salah opened the scoring with his 32nd league goal of the season, meaning he finished two ahead of three-time Golden Boot victor Harry Kane of Tottenham.

But really the pressure was on Chelsea to get something in this match; a win for them was more meaningful than a win for the Toon Army.

While the league season has stumbled to completion for Chelsea, they still have one more game to go. "I'm not in a position to say [whether an expert in that field should be hired]".

'We have six days to change our approach and desire and will to fight.
