Microsoft to launch low-priced Surface

Microsoft is building a cheaper Surface tablet to compete against Apple's iPad, according to Bloomberg.

The device, which will be powered by Intel processors and priced at around $400, is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2018. The report also claims that the Microsoft tablets will be 20% lighter than the Apple counterparts.

It's a notable difference compared to the current Surface Pro, which boasts ~13 hour battery life on a single charge. Microsoft was in second place with 26% of devices shipped running Windows, while Apple lost ground last year, dropping to just 11% iOS devices, down almost 4% from the year before. LTE Advanced connectivity will also be an option for those who want high-speed internet coverage when away from Wi-Fi networks. Surface tablet sales were up 1.8 per cent in the most recent quarter and the entire Surface hardware business brought in $4.4 billion over the past year. It's unclear if Windows 10's "S Mode" will be enabled by default with the tablet, though this makes sense given it's reportedly being positioned as a budget device.

The last time Microsoft ended up releasing something affordable was back when the Surface 3 was announced, a device that featured a base price tag of $499. The Surface Pro line has prices from United States dollars 799. "The Surface Hub 2 is a 50.5", 4K+ Windows 10 tablet that offers a wall or stand mounted design that facilitates teleconferencing, remote meetings, and digital whiteboarding without sacrificing aesthetics. These days, the tablet herd has thinned a bit, and Microsoft has established itself as a maker of premium first-party hardware. The company stopped making it at the end of 2016. Like previous Surface tablets, it will feature an integrated kickstand. It is expected to launch the new line of Surface Pro tablets at a cost of around $400 (Rs 27,100 approx) which is likely to be coupled with a less expensive version of stylus, mouse and keyboard.
