Met department issues severe weather warnings in Delhi, other regions

The other states, that have been warned of a possible thunderstorm accompanied by squall and hail, are Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Kerala, West Bengal, Sikkim, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. The Indian Meteorological Department issued warnings to the North Indian states of thunderstorm and heavy rains.

"Thunderstorm with squall conditions are expected with wind speeds reaching 50-70 km/hr in some places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand".

Notably, the IMD had issued an amber coloured alert for Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh with a forecast for Tuesday.

"Thunderstorm and dust storm accompanied by high-speed winds are very likely at isolated places in Rajasthan".

"These thunderstorms and dust storms will be moderate, and the wind speed for these days will be in the range of 50 to 60 Km per hour", added Pradhan.

The National Disaster Management Authority said thunderstorm and squall are likely to hit 12 states on Wednesday. Dust storm very likely at isolated places over Rajasthan and heat wave conditions likely at one or two pockets over Vidarbha, the department said.

Four colour codes are issued to indicate various categories of alerts.

"All evening schools will remain closed tomorrow following the weather warning", said a senior government official.

Those who are stopping on the road or parking their vehicle have been advised to keep away from overhead electrical wires, tinned roofs, trees, etc., it said.

Meanwhile, the weather remained generally dry today and winds remained calm in most parts of Punjab and Haryana.

The late-night dust storm that hit Delhi and several northern parts have also affected the flight operations at India Gandhi International Airport.
