MD: Officer killed responding to suspicious vehicle

A Maryland police manhunt ended on Tuesday when officers arrested three male teenagers suspected of playing a role in the killing of a female police officer who responded to a burglary report in a Baltimore suburb, officials said.

Four suspects are in custody after a Baltimore County police officer died Monday afternoon following an encounter in the Perry Hall area. Arriving paramedics rushed her to the hospital.

Another suspect, 16-year-old Dawnta Anthony Harris, was arrested Monday. Harris was expected to appear in court for a bail review later on Tuesday.

A large police presence can be seen across several locations along Belair Road while police collect evidence and search for at least one armed suspect.

The probable cause statement said a caller told police Monday that she saw a black Jeep near her residence and that three suspicious people got out and were walking around homes.

He said the officer's family has been notified, adding she would have been a four-year veteran in July.

Kurek said his other son, a volunteer firefighter, performed CPR on her while they called 911.

At his bail review, prosecutors said Harris had stolen four cars since December, and went missing from house arrest for vehicle theft just days before he allegedly killed the officer. "Our prayers go out to this fearless officer's family, [Baltimore County Police and Fire] and the Baltimore County community", he wrote. He says it clearly shows Harris accelerating a stolen Jeep at Caprio after she was trying to apprehend him on the suburban cul-de-sac where a burglary had just taken place.

The unnamed officer was responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle near the Perry Hall area around 2pm when the shooting took place. The officer, who wasn't immediately identified, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Gov. Larry Hogan offered his condolences to the Baltimore County Police Department. He told officers he saw Caprio drive up the block, when she got out of her vehicle and demanded that he get out of the Jeep.

"The next thing he heard was a pop, and he saw the Jeep take off and run right over her", said Kurek.

"The dark will not hamper our investigation", Vinson vowed at a news briefing Monday evening.

Events began unfolding Monday afternoon in the leafy neighborhood of single-family homes.

No further details have been released at this time. It was then that Kurek's neighbor, Dahle Amendt, said he had just settled into his recliner for a rest when he heard a woman's voice outside his house. The officers who have died at the hands of gunshots is up. Shawn Vinson, a spokesman for Baltimore County police. It's a quiet community.

Three elementary schools were kept on alert status for hours, with students and teachers told to stay in their school buildings as police continued a search for the suspects.

The district released the following statement: "Parents may come to Gunpowder, Perry Hall, and Seven Oaks elementary schools to pick up their children".

School officials tweeted overnight that all of the county's public schools would open on time.
