And should the people answering at the other end be told that they are talking to a robot?

It's unclear how Google intends to make those disclosures.

"We are designing this feature with disclosure built-in, and we'll make sure the system is appropriately identified", a Google spokesperson said in a statement via email. The introduction of Google Duplex will be something to look forward to as it goes above and beyond everything we already have in regards to artificial intelligence. The technology is used widely, to provide speech and face recognition, language translation, and personal recommendations on music, film and shopping sites.

Company CEO Sundar Pichai said that Google has been working on newer and more life-like version of its spoken AI that features natural voice that is "closer to how humans speak".

At I/O, Google unsurprisingly showed off an innocent demonstration of its AI calling a salon to book a haircut appointment and a restaurant to book a table.

The most headline-grabbing announcement was probably the revelation that singer and actor John Legend would lend his voice to Google's AI assistant platform later this year.

While Google Assistant will soon make calls on behalf of users in the United States, its capabilities will be limited to just three tasks: booking a restaurant, a hair salon appointment and checking closing/holiday hours for a business.

Pichai said there were important questions being raised about Duplex.

One big addition to Google Assistant is the Google Duplex technology which will let users allow Google Assistant to make and handle phone calls for them for specific purposes like setting up appointments. Nonetheless, the Assistant's new prowess will raise questions on the future of this technology and whether we might soon have virtual assistants that sound more human.

For Google, this type of deception crosses an ethical line that the technology company is not prepared to take. For more complicated voice calls on behalf of humans, more training and machine learning will have to be imparted Google Assistant.

Google introduced their newest jaw-dropping feat at the I/O conference this week: a hyper-realistic sounding chatbot that will be able to make phone calls for you.

"We recognize the importance of the discussion about Google Duplex - and, as stated at the outset, we have to consider full transparency of the technology".
