Gay lawmaker implies Alabama governor is a lesbian

Governor Kay Ivey's spokesperson has released a statement after an Alabama lawmaker posted rumors they had reportedly heard about the governor's sexuality.

Patricia Todd, who was the first openly gay lawmaker elected to Alabama's legislature, took to social media to vent about Ivey's perceived hypocrisy after the Governor signed an anti-LGBT law.

Will someone out her for God's sake.... Todd also alleged that Ivey's secret girlfriend was forced to move out after she became governor.

In her tweet, Todd complained about "closeted elected officials".

Todd's tweets are protected, but news outlets shared screenshots of the tweet. However, her Twitter account is now set to private.

Ivey's campaign again denied the claims.

This is a disgusting lie being pushed by a paid liberal political hack. There is absolutely no truth to it.

AL.com asked Todd for evidence about her claim about Ivey on Wednesday. It's false. It's wrong.

"This most recent personal attack against me is beyond disgraceful", Ivey wrote. It's a bald faced lie. "And I realize that it's not a popular opinion and I'll get a lot of backlash, but at this point in time, I'm willing to risk everything politically to make this happen".

"Whether these attacks are malicious or ignorant or both", she ended her official statement, "they represent everything that's wrong with politics today".

An Alabama political analyst says this would be a non-political issue in any campaign except a Republican primary in the south. The outspoken Todd might be remembered by LGBT Alabamans for her attempt to revise the state's archaic sex ed guidelines that include lessons on homosexuality being socially unacceptable.

Ivey's GOP gubernatorial rival Scott Dawson cited WHNT's reporting Tuesday and criticized the governor concerning Free2Be.

Todd defended her comments to AL.com before the job offer was rescinded, reiterating that she "hates hypocrites" and that she has long warned that she would expose gay politicians who act against LGBTQ rights.
