Fox Renews 'Gotham' For A Fifth And Final Season

Gotham joins a roster of scripted dramas at the "new Fox" that includes Lethal Weapon, Empire, Star, The Orville, The Gifted, 911 and The Resident, plus new additions The Passage and Proven Innocent. While it would be cool to see the story of the show play out elsewhere, we do like the idea of writing towards a final season and getting a fitting conclusion.

The site reports that the final season will, per the producers, "wrap up this unique origin story of the great DC Comics Super-villains and vigilantes, which revealed an entirely new chapter that has never been told".

It's unclear at this time if Gotham will premiere in the autumn, as the last four seasons did, or if it will be held for mid-season should it get a reduced episode order.

The renewal arrives as Gotham needs exactly 13 episodes to reach the 100-episode milestone needed to sell the show in syndication, with Warners fighting hard for one final pickup amid Fox's changing creative direction. Lucifer would make a ideal addition to the new service, as would Gotham, should showrunners look to continue the story beyond season 5.

"The final season will focus on Bruce Wayne's transformation into the caped crusader", Fox said in announcing its Season 5 news.

The waiting is finally over as FOX have renewed Gotham for a fifth season but they've also confirmed it will be show's last outing.

Gotham was a strong ratings performer in its first season, but it has been falling since, averaging a 1.4 rating in the key 18 to 49 demo in its fifth season, compared to a 1.9 in its fourth. Hence, the 100-episode benchmark became a goal for long-running shows in order to appear more valuable.
