Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Tops Billboard 100

Childish Gambino's 'This Is America' Tops Billboard 100

The track ends Drake's 15-week reign at the top of the charts - Nice for What was number one for four weeks after God's Plan ruled for 11.

"This Is America" will handily top Childish's other highest topping song, "Redbone", of his last album, Awaken, My Love!

Since its May 5 release, Childish Gambino's deeply symbolic "This is America" video had the internet buzzing over its cultural significance, sparking debate and political conversation across blogs and social media. As it stands now, the single also holds the top spot in streaming songs with 65.3 million streams in the week ending May 10, according to Nielsen Music.

The track and its politically conscious music video has left analysts decoding the hidden meanings behind some of the imagery in the clip since its release almost 10 days ago.

The song, fueled by its socially-conscious video, could dethrone Drake's "Nice for What". "This Is America" also sold 78,000 downloads within the first five days of its release.

"This Is America" is the lead single from Glover's upcoming fourth Childish Gambino album, and only the latest creative effort from the TV, film, and music star.

But Mr. Glover may be one of the last artists to benefit from chart rules that counted free streams from outlets like YouTube on a basis equal to paid streams from subscription services like Apple Music or Spotify's premium tier.
