CDC 'Ticks' Off Twitter With Photo Of Poppyseed Muffin With Ticks

Fleas and ticks can spread serious illnesses to dogs and cats, including Lyme disease, which can be fatal to our four-legged friends. Of those 230 cases, 8 of them were in Winnebago County. But the question "Can you spot all 5 ticks in this photo?" struck people as a little hostile, and perhaps even like a veiled threat. "Now ticks are out in full force." said Amanda Miller, the Associate Medical Director at Swedish American Hospital.

The study comes amid a new report from the CDC that finds ticks and flea bites tripled in the USA from 2004 to 2016.

Ticks are notorious for being small, pesky, and potential causes of Lyme disease. Many Twitter users claimed the post ruined poppy seed muffins for them.

CDC officials say the tweet was not meant to offend anyone but to raise awareness and protect you during the summer months.

Other people felt like the CDC's message wasn't very clear.

The replies, many revolted, continued - some 900 in all - and the CDC issued a tick-in-cheek apology on Monday: "Sorry we ticked some of you off!"

"During and after treatment, I emphasize the importance of tick bite prevention", says Dr. Chesney.

The tweet went viral with over 1,900 retweets.
