Back to School-Man Arrested,1st Ld-Writethru, TX

A 25-year-old basketball-loving man from Texas was arrested this past Friday, accused of posing as a student in order to play hoops at a Dallas high school.

The reasons for his enrollment in Dallas ISD, and for the transfer, weren't immediately clear. He led his team to the playoffs this winter and even earned the title of district offensive player of the year. "During that time, an individual used that opportunity for personal gain", district spokeswoman Robyn Harris told WFAA.

The district tells WFAA students who've been through a natural disaster or are homeless aren't asked for the same documentation that's typically required, per federal law.

An attorney wasn't listed for Gilstrap-Portley in online records as of Wednesday.

"Unfortunately this was a flawless storm", said Dr. Michael Hinojosa, DISD superintendent.

"I'm upset, frustrated, angry and sad at the same time", she said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News.

"This was a thirst that he had and he put everything at risk for himself and for us to live this charade", said Hinojosa. "That makes a little more sense now". "It hurts your feelings".

Hinojosa addressed a narrative that emerged in the wake of Gilstrap-Portley's arrest, in which he has been portrayed as an opportunist looking for one more shot at basketball glory.

"He gave us a story about little brothers and sisters that he was taking care of that were in and out of homes", said Bayer.

Hillcrest High School basketball's newest guard turned quite a few heads this season in Dallas.

Gilstrap-Portley has since bonded out, according to The Dallas Morning News, but not before scheming his way back onto the varsity court and sending shock waves through a pair of Dallas high schools that evidently missed the fact he was a full-grown man. I saw him in the hallway we saw him here and there.

At Hillcrest basketball games, Gilstrap-Portley was occasionally seen cradling an infant girl in the company of a young woman, but they were assumed to be a sister and niece of his. His passion is basketball.

Based on the police report, Bouvier went to the high school and declared that he's homeless. He originally attempted to do so at Skyline High School, but because he did not have a physical, he could not play at the school.
