Adam Silver comments on Supreme Court's ruling regarding sports betting

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for states to legalize sports betting in a defeat for the major American sports leagues, endorsing New Jersey's bid to allow such wagering and striking down a 1992 federal law that prohibited it in most places.

Penn National Gaming, which operates Hollywood Casino in Toledo, is interested.

Legislators and lobbyists who support expanding gambling to include sports betting in Iowa said a 6-3 ruling from the high court is all they needed to advance a sports betting bill in the 2019 legislative session.

An estimate previously compiled by the American Gaming Association concluded people in the USA wager about US$150 billion on sports each year illegally.

State Rep. Bill Seitz (R., Cincinnati) said he believes there would be interest in the General Assembly, although he doesn't believe it would get serious consideration until next year.

"It's been a discussion topic, but it's been illegal at federal level, so it's not been discussed in detail", said House Speaker Brian Bosma.

They called New Jersey's law a threat to the integrity of competition, fearing game-fixing and other types of cheating. "We can not allow this practice to proliferate amid uneven enforcement and a patchwork race to the regulatory bottom".

Florida has a compact with the Seminole Tribe that gives them a monopoly on card games like blackjack, but the future of the agreement is in limbo, and sports betting could add a new element to negotiations.

"It's a major money grab from the wallets of ordinary Americans cloaked as a state's rights case", said Les Bernal, national director of the group Stop Predatory Gambling.

"DeWine is not for expanded gambling", said Ryan Stubenrauch, campaign spokesman for Mr. DeWine.

The U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia struck down this measure because it had the obvious impact of legalizing gambling that was forbidden under federal law. "It's still against the law".

New Jersey's Monmouth Park racetrack has already established a sports betting facility and said it plans to take bets "as soon as possible".

Gamblers put $4.9 billion on legal sports bets in Nevada in 2017, and an estimated $3 billion was illegally wagered outside of United States through offshore bookmakers. Whatley said the legislation could help see fantasy sports games become a reality in Alabama once again.

"I think that is the biggest sticking point", Hoskins said.

There are bills in both the Senate and Assembly that look to outline how sports betting will be regulated.

Under PASPA, only four states met a 1991 deadline to legalize sports betting, with Nevada authorizing wagers on football, basketball and other athletic contests.

Colorado only allows blackjack (21), poker, slot machines, craps and roulette. The Act is a 1992 law that barred state-authorized sports gambling.

9NEWS talked to a couple of state lawmakers who wondered whether sports betting could be classified like horse racing - which could potentially bypass the need for a constitutional amendment.

In the meantime, those companies could still partner with specific casinos or venues, particularly on the mobile and online side of the business. William Hill has sports betting parlors in England.

Now, other states can decide for themselves whether to get in on the action. "New Jersey citizens wanted sports gambling and the federal Gov't had no right to tell them no".
