The Islamic State group quickly claimed responsibility for the Saturday night attack via its Aamaq news agency, saying Azimov was their "soldier" acting in response to the group's calls for supporters to target members of the USA -led anti-IS military coalition, a stock response.

CBS News reported that the militant group Islamic State's news agency later said that the attacker was one of its "soldiers".

The attacker was shot dead by police after stabbing five people in a popular tourist district near the Paris opera house Saturday night, when sidewalks and restaurants were filled with people.

French officials said Sunday that the man behind a deadly knife attack in Paris the previous night was a 20-year-old Frenchman born in Chechnya.

Tragically, one man-aged 29-was killed in the attack and four others were wounded, of which two were seriously wounded in the terror attack.

He said he was informed the dead man had received French citizenship and held a Russian passport until he was 14.

Azimov did not know his victims, Interior Ministry spokesman Frédéric de Lanouvelle said.

ISIS has quite a few fighters from the Russian republic of Chechnya in its ranks, a lot of whom journey to global locations equivalent to Syria for coaching. As a result, the attack killed 29-year-old man.

"Based on testimony of eyewitnesses who said they heard the attacker saying '[Allahu] Akbar' and because of the method of the attack it's the anti-terror unit who is in charge of the investigation", he said. "I was taking orders and I saw a young woman trying to get into the restaurant in panic", Jonathan, a waiter at a Korean restaurant, told AFP.

The interior minister said the lives of the four injured people are no longer in danger.

French president Emmanuel Macron said France would "not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom", and praised police for "neutralising the terrorist".

The FSPRT watchlist alone has almost 20,000 people, of whom about half are under active surveillance.

A powerful dust storm, heavy rain and lightning struck parts of India on Sunday, killing at least 23 people, injuring more than 40 and bringing the death toll in similar unseasonal storms this month to 157.

The revelation that the perpetrator was on the state security watchlist - known as the "S file" - drew an angry reaction from the right and far-right opposition.

"What use can this S file be if we don't use it to ensure that these time bombs cannot do any harm on French soil?"

France has become a major target of terrorist attacks in recent years.

In terms typical of Islamic State's propaganda, he calls on Muslims in Europe to try to move to the group's now much-reduced territory, or, failing that, to commit attacks at home.

A state of emergency put in place just after the 2015 Paris attacks was lifted in October when Macron's centrist government passed a new law boosting the powers of security forces.
