US University closed after 100 students fall ill

Western Connecticut State University is shutting its doors on Monday after nearly 100 students have become ill. Students are instructed to return to campus two or three days after symptoms clear.

President John B. Clark said Sunday that closing the school Monday was "the best and most conservative course of action to protect our university community from infection and spread of the disease", a decision he made after consulting with the state Department of Health, the Danbury Department of Health, Danbury Hospital and the university's Director of Health Services. The DPH said that the illness was first reported on Friday afternoon but some students became sick as early as April 17th.

However, they know it is nasty and that's part of the reason why they are closed for Monday.

The affected students at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury were suffering from vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pains.

University officials said both campuses in Danbury are closed on Monday as maintenance crews clean and disinfect school buildings.

Laboratory tests determined the outbreak of gastrointestinal illness was Norovirus, the Connecticut State Department of Public Health said.

Health officials are urging students and staff to frequently wash their hands with soap and water and, if they have symptoms, to avoid certain activities including preparing food for others and working in day cares, health care facilities and restaurants.

However, over the weekend more students started to fall ill and now it's up to about 100 students.

They initially ruled out the possibility of E. coli. It also advised students to drink plenty of fluids.

The school told students that if possible, they should head home for the day to limit the potential spread of the illness to others.
