Unnao rape case: BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar arrested by CBI

The first FIR pertains to the alleged rape of the girl in which Sengar and a woman, Shashi Singh, have been named as the accused.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar, accused of raping a teenager previous year, was sent to police custody for seven days by a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Saturday, a day after he was arrested by the investigating agency. She had also alleged that while the MLA was raping her daughter, Shashi Singh stood outside the room as a guard. The central agency team converted three FIRs earlier filed by the Unnao police to move ahead in the case.

"Some goons of accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar are threatening villagers to keep quiet", he told news agency ANI.

The police custody was approved under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on charges of raping the 17-year old girl. "He has been sent to 7-day CBI custody".

In its 20-page order, the court also said, "The disturbing feature of the case is that the law and order machinery and the government officials were directly in league and under the influence of Kuldeep Singh". One of the teams questioned the family members of the survivor who were stationed at a hotel in Unnao city while another unit visited the Makhi police station and quizzed policemen who were suspended. The rang rape of the girl after which her father ran from pillar to post to nail the ruling party legislator, only to end up battered and bruised and dead in police custody, has triggered a political storm and public outrage.

The Congress, led by RahulGandhi, held a candlelight vigil on Thursday night, demanding action from the Narendra Modi government at the Centre.

Alleging inaction and coercion from powerful people, the victim attempted self immolation in front of the CM's house on April 8 and the next day, her father died in jail with post-mortem report suggesting serious injuries on his body.

"On one hand, Salathiaji is demanding justice, while on the other hand, he has called to shut down the high court".

The high court's observations yesterday revealed "how a chief minister can become deaf, blind and mute to a heinous crime like rape, the custodial death of the victim's father and the continuous loud cries of the victim's family", he said. Sengar is accused of raping a teenager in Unnao district in June 2017.
