United Nations rejects Russian call to condemn Syria strikes

"We had an early warning of the strike from the Russians and all military bases were evacuated a few days ago", the official said.

Iran, the Assad regime's other key ally, called the US -led strikes an "aggression" that was "a flagrant violation of global laws and a disregard for Syria's right of national sovereignty and territorial integrity", according to Iran's semi-official FARS News agency.

In France, Macron claimed in a TV interview he had "proof" that Assad's regime had used chemical weapons and vowed a response "in due course".

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", Moscow's United Nations ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said on Thursday.

Another official said Bolton did not advocate for any particular position beyond agreeing that the United States should retaliate for the attack if it was clear what chemicals had been used and who used them.

Russian Federation and Syria have said there was no evidence of a chemical weapons attack. "I hope no one would dare to launch such an adventure now", Lavrov said.

Trump said the strikes were meant to deter the use of chemical weapons like the attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Douma last week, and that the USA was prepared to continue the attacks until the Syrian regime stops using chemical weapons.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Karen Pierce meanwhile rejected a charge by a Russian defence ministry spokesman that Britain was involved in staging a fake chemical weapons attack in Douma.

Sheikh Naim Qassem, deputy leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement, told Lebanese daily al-Joumhouria: "The conditions do not point to a total war happening. unless Trump and (Israeli leader Benjamin) Netanyahu completely lose their minds". He accused the United States, France and Britain of "demonstrating a blatant disregard for global law".

USA allies have offered strong words of support for Washington but no clear military plans have yet emerged.

Some other of Trump's European allies are anxious to avert a U.S.

Senior Russian figures, including the head of the military, warned that U.S. missiles will be shot down and their launch sites targeted if Russian personnel come under threat, the report said.

"And what's most important is no one contests that the use of chemical weapons can not be tolerated and must be deterred, " he said.

U.S., French and British air forces conducted a massive missile strike on military and civilian infrastructure in Syria from 3:42 to 5:10 Moscow time (0042-0210 GMT), the statement added.

Inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons are expected to arrive in Syria over the weekend to investigate the reported attack, following an invitation from Damascus.

Global stock markets have had a whipsaw week, largely fuelled by Trump's tendency to change his mind over top policy issues. The government's capture of Douma, the last town held by the rebels in eastern Ghouta, marked a major victory for Assad. Rebels and jihadist insurgents are largely contained to two areas along Syria's northern and southern borders.
