Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium; first dual camera smartphone from the company announced

It is still Monday but Sony already delivered what will likely be the biggest announcement of the week. We knew it was coming, but we had no idea it would be so soon. We're eager to see how this phone compares not just to the rest of Sony's XZ2 lineup but other leading smartphones.

Xperia XZ2 Premium is built to keep you going all day with its high-capacity 3540mAh battery and Xperia's useful battery features, including Smart Stamina and STAMINA mode. The company claims that the display on this smartphone is 11 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than its predecessor.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium comes with Quick Charge 3.0 support for its 3,540 mAh power cell. The regular XZ2 has an 18:9 display. And if the revamped design of the current XZ2 models haven't grabbed you, Sony is betting that an improved camera on the Premium version of the phone will.

The major highlight of the device is the new dual rear camera at the back. But it is a big deal because Sony's phone shoots at a much higher resolution than the Galaxy S9 phones - 1080p resolution versus 720p - which means that the Xperia XZ2 Premium's super-slow video should be clearer and more detailed. Instead, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium has a 16:9 4K HDR panel.

The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium comes fitted with a 5.8-inch 4K display with HDR support. Yes, that's incredibly sharp, but Sony's argument will be that the phone captures and plays back native 4K content.

Last week, it came to light that Sony's Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 would become available for pre-order via Best Buy, starting last Friday, while Amazon would start selling these handsets from May 20. It follows the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact announced this past February. The Xperia XZ2 display is impressive, so we suspect the XZ2 Premium display will be great too. The flagship is armed with a Snapdragon 845 coupled with 6GB of RAM. It ships with a USB Type-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box.

Some of the added features include a Motion Eye dual camera setup with an ISO rating of 12800 for HD quality video recording.

Instead, the Japanese firm has split image capture between one 19-megapixel colour sensor and a 12-megapixel monochrome. Apple and Samsung have a duopoly in premium smartphone market, and their closest competitors LG, Sony and HTC have lost out in the past few months. The lens is f/1.6, while the pixel size is 1.55μm. Featuring S-Force Front Surround, they're our loudest Xperia speakers ever. Moving on to the front, you get a 13 MP single camera with f/2.0 aperture and 22 mm wide-angle lens.

There's been no word on what the Xperia XZ2 Premium might cost. The company has not talked about pricing but confirmed that the phone will be available globally from Summer 2018.

Sony dubs its new Xperia XZ2 "ultimate creation machine", thanks to its new camera technology.
